Building for research
Building spaces for scientific and biomedical research requires much more than construction knowledge. These are highly complex technical environments where precision, interdisciplinary coordination, and adaptability are essential to meet the needs of the teams working within them.
During this past year, at CALAF Constructora, we have participated in some of the most significant biomedical research projects being promoted in the country. These projects share high technical demands, the integration of specialized facilities, and the need to work with the highest standards of quality and control.
This experience is reflected in four projects linked to leading institutions: the new Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) building, already completed, and the Únicas Sant Joan de Déu, CaixaResearch Institute, and the new Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) projects, currently under construction.
Four different projects, but with the same purpose: to create spaces prepared to generate knowledge, drive innovation, and facilitate the breakthroughs that will contribute to improving people’s lives.
Because behind every laboratory, every collaboration space, and every scientific infrastructure, there are teams researching, innovating, and working to respond to major health challenges.
Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR)
We participated in the construction of the new Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) building, an infrastructure of nearly 17,000 m² designed to boost biomedical research, innovation, and knowledge transfer. The center incorporates spaces for advanced therapies and new technologies that reinforce the Vall d’Hebron Campus’s role as one of the leading health research environments in Southern Europe.
The management and execution of a project of this complexity, based on coordination, planning, and collaborative work among all involved parties, has been recognized with the 2025 Catalunya Construcció Award for Integrated Project Management and the International KOBAH Award, which distinguishes benchmark projects in the application of Lean construction methodologies.
CaixaResearch Institute
We are currently working on the construction of the CaixaResearch Institute, the first research center in Spain and Portugal and one of the first in Europe dedicated entirely to immunology. With a surface area of 20,000 m², the new facility is designed to promote research, innovation, and knowledge transfer in a key discipline for the future of medicine.
Únicas Sant Joan de Déu
We are participating in the construction of Únicas SJD, a pioneering center focused on the diagnosis, research, and treatment of rare diseases. When it becomes operational, the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu complex will become one of the three largest in the world dedicated to these pathologies, integrating research, precision diagnosis, and new therapies in a single environment.
Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB)
We are also working on the construction of the future PRBB Ciutadella, a facility destined to become one of Barcelona’s main hubs for precision medicine. The center will bring together nearly 950 researchers from centers of excellence, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration in the field of health and biomedicine within the Ciutadella del Coneixement ecosystem.
Building the spaces where tomorrow’s breakthroughs will be born
Participation in these projects reflects our expertise in highly complex environments and our ability to respond to the specific requirements of scientific and biomedical research.
At CALAF Constructora, we understand that building a research center is much more than executing a building. It is contributing to the creation of infrastructures that will allow for the development of knowledge, the promotion of innovation, and the realization of breakthroughs with a direct impact on society.
