Architecture at the service of cutting-edge biomedical research
The new building of the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) is much more than a scientific infrastructure. It is a space to transform health research, and at CALAF Constructora, we are proud to have led its construction alongside SEROM and AGEFRED.
With over 16,000 m², this pioneering facility integrates laboratories, innovation spaces, and public outreach areas. A strategic commitment to talent, personalized medicine, and collaboration between research, business, and society.
At CALAF Constructora, we build environments where science can grow, where knowledge can connect, and where technology can serve people. An award-winning and recognized work of architectural and technical excellence, projecting the future of biomedical research from the heart of the Vall d’Hebron Campus.

A strategic project for future research
The VHIR building is a key part of the Vall d’Hebron Campus transformation plan, representing a firm commitment to translational research, advanced therapies, and personalized medicine. CALAF Constructora has brought to life a space that brings together over 600 researchers, optimizing team connections and fostering synergies with companies, universities, and healthcare institutions.
The integration of the new building within the hospital environment represents a significant step forward in strengthening knowledge transfer and the development of innovative solutions for people’s health.
Integrated, sustainable, and humanistic architecture
The design by BAAS and Espinet/Ubach is based on a strategy of landscape and functional integration. The building is embedded into the sloping terrain, with only one visible facade, and the green roof becomes an extension of Collserola Park.
With a layout articulated around three courtyards, the project connects the laboratories with the exterior, promotes natural light, and creates spaces for meeting and well-being.
This Mediterranean, efficient, and porous architecture responds to the needs of cutting-edge science, but also to the desire to build a healthy, inspiring, and open environment for the public.
A building to transform knowledge into real impact
The new VHIR includes areas for research, innovation, outreach, and business collaboration. It houses cutting-edge laboratories, the advanced therapies center, a next-generation cyclotron, spaces for spin-offs, and an Innovation Hub of 2,212 m².
This concentration of scientific, technological, and business activity has a common goal: to improve people’s lives. At CALAF Constructora, we have contributed to creating a space capable of hosting the most disruptive research, attracting talent, and fostering strategic alliances with social impact.
